adult learners week
fantastic week working in partnership with #shapingthefuture @Alison_Hunt from #NSAN
@Open University @ColegMenai and ADT covering the full framework of learning in Wales
It's that long since I posted, blogger is unrecognisable!
Apologises but life has been busy!
I'm now part of a sub group looking to support life long learning in my industry. so far I have cover three sites, talking to management and the unions to inspire them to find ULRS's.
the journey has only just begun but is fascinating. I have cover over 2000 miles so far and that is truly the only downside of all this!

The Ministerial launch of the WULF SEUS project
Unite Launch exciting new three year WULF project- Skills for the Energy and Utilities Sectors in North Wales
Caption L to R Glyn Haynes, WULF co-ordinator, Alwyn Rowlands Ynys Mon CLP chairman, Jeff Cuthbert AM - Deputy Minister for Skills, Julie Evans, Unite WULF Manager, Keith Moore, Unite Learning Rep and Peter Hughes, Unite’s Senior regional officer in North Wales.
Deputy Minister for Skills, Jeff Cuthbert AM, officially launched Unite’s three year WULF project to develop skills for the energy and utilities sectors in North Wales.
Launched at the Galeri in Caernarfon, the event was well attended by key employers, County Councils, Wales TUC, Unite representatives, members of political parties, Sector Skills Council and stakeholders. Mr Cuthbert said he was delighted to officially open such an important project.
“Skills for the Energy and Utilities Sector is a great opportunity for employers to develop access to learning. The energy sector is vital to the success of the Welsh economy and its emergence from the recession. With important developments in the nuclear industry, building partnerships and developing skills in this sector is crucial.
“This is another important investment by the Welsh Government in the workforce of Wales and an excellent example of how we are helping to protect our workers from a challenging global recession.”
Ynys Mon CLP Chair Alwyn Rowlands said that the WULF launch was a great success and everyone involved should be commended for their hard work in these austere times. Mr Rowlands also commentated on the successful WULF learning hub on the Eaton Electricals Site in Morawelon, Holyhead and that the Centre was going from strength to strength.
“ Unite the Union, the Welsh Government and everyone else involved in WULF have to be congratulated for their vision and determination. In addition to community learning, the Unite project aims to provide vital skills training to employees across the sector, particular those under threat of redundancy. The project will engage non-traditional learners in essential skills provision, such as communication, application of number and ICT, as well as build on existing skills to enhance vocational qualifications and support the Welsh Government’s strategic approach to energy.
Hopefully these courses will be put to good use when our young people will be seeking employment when Wylfa B and the Energy Island project come into fruition.”.

Sharing the learning
I attended the Wales TUC Stakeholders meet in Wrexham on Wednesday, what an inspiring day.
Andrew Martin Senior Sector Unit Manager at Welsh Assembly Government gave us even more excellent news regarding Basic Skill,s and emphasised the need for seamless partnership between WULF and ES.
Marie Qazzaz WULF Project manager for UCATT talked about her work with housing associations, that's one determined lady who has cracked such a difficult project due to the transient nature of the workforce. Marie also talked about the ability of ULR's to communicate at the right level with fellow workers.
Adrian Roper from Cartefi Cymru mentioned about staff being promoted beyond their IT skills, which struck a chord with me. This is a definite barrier for good people not putting themselves up for promotion also.
Donna Hutton a Unison regional Organiser talked about helping people go through change, isn't that the one constant in life these days?
Alli Hunt from NSAN gave a great overview of the work going on to support training in the nuclear industry.
I gave an overview of the work we are doing at Wylfa and within Magnox to encourage Life Long Learning.
Louise Lawrence for Arfon Dwyfor Training talked about the Essential skills training they provide, but here own personal story of her pathway through education really struck a chord, one the great lessons, not everyone is in the right place at the right time in school and equally not everyone knows what career path they want at 16!
The learning stories from Jean Richards and Vanessa Doughty also were very inspiring and both are forces to be reckoned with!

MJC Conference
Had a great couple of days at the conference in Birmingham.
Good to see all the hard work being done by the transition team.
I was well chuffed and surprised by the wine glasses I received from management for the work I have done in my Union Learning Rep role. Hopefully my talk on the role of the ULR will inspire others to take up the baton.
